In Rivière-du-Loup, the maritime community comes together to discuss Eastern Quebec’s key issues

On Thursday, September 17, St. Lawrence Shipowners brought together more than 100 participants in Rivière-du-Loup for a luncheon conference focused on the role of marine transportation in supply chains and the economic development of Eastern Quebec. Businesses, regional partners and members of the research community gathered to discuss the sector’s needs and opportunities for regional growth.

Moderated by Saul Polo, President and CEO of St. Lawrence Shipowners, the panel highlighted the importance of port infrastructure for businesses and communities, particularly island and remote communities. Discussions focused on carriers’ operational needs, the complementarity of transportation modes and the ability of ports to support current and future economic activity.

Aging infrastructure, capacity constraints and modernization needs were central to the discussions. These challenges affect the entire supply chain: suitable infrastructure is essential to ensure reliable supplies, facilitate the movement of goods and support regional growth. Access to predictable funding is also an important condition for moving necessary projects forward.

The event also provided an opportunity to strengthen connections between industry and the research community. In collaboration with the Réseau Québec maritime, researchers presented their projects, contributing new perspectives to discussions on the future of the sector.
